Hahei tinnie king action

Headed to Hahei for the yearly camping with the family in law's

Always get excited as I have 12 foot star craft to play with for a couple days and had the goal of getting a king, Plan was to get some KY livies and drift them around some of the wash down the coast.

First attempt. FAIL. bit rough for the tinne.

Tuesday morning. Got up and met my mate james who was coming out with me for the morning, towed the boat down to the beach with the quad and launched the dear girl.
Put the small squid lures out and towed them around Hereheretaura point and and picked up a perfect looking livie. Into the bucket and quick run down toward Hot water beach where there is a nice little island out of 25 odd meters with lots of wash and up flow.

Out went the livie and figured the best drift to get the bait as close as possible to the Ledge. hour or so passed as we flicked soft-baits into the wash with them just getting nibbled in seconds by Leather jackets.

Then the first school of rats turned up, it was a pack of  50 - 100 which circled under the boat all a little small for the livie. But had no problem pack attacking a soft-bait on the surface was an awesome site with 3 to 4 tail out of the water trying to slam the bait. Landed a nice 70cm rat on 4kg which gave us little excitement. Then went dead again for hour or so.

Around 9:30 another pack of rats came in, james has the same idea again with lure on the surface, But as he casted with his back to the balloon the ballon decided to move. James James get your lure in as we have an inquiry. Trying to get his soft bait away from the rats the balloon disappeared and the KY was engulfed buy a dark green Mass. James just got the lure away from the rats just in time to pick up the rod which was screaming. Set the Hook and Tighten the drag as she pealed.

I was steering the boat around the cray pots as she took a run towards the shallow part of the ledge. once we were on top it was a great up and down battle for 10 - 15 min in 20 meters of water.

As the dark green girl came up through the large jellies the gaff was grabbed, first attempt missed but second was sent home and she hit the deck.

We were over the moon, with james PB king on the little Star craft. It went 14kg and feed 17 people that night.

Not a massive fish, but pulled over its weight for sure.
